Research

The Department of Political Science at Babeș-Bolyai University brings together an integrated set of research objectives and methodologies. Given the significance of a Political Science department in a post-communist country, special emphasis is placed on the study of politics in Central and Eastern Europe.

As of 2025, our department is the only Political Science department in Romania included in the QS World University Rankings, ranked in the 301–400 range globally, and among the top five in Central and Eastern Europe.

About Us

Thus, our academic staff conducts research on issues such as democratization, democratic consolidation, transition to a market economy, identity politics, energy policies, human rights, political culture, and political parties. While the focus remains on Romania and neighboring countries, we have also developed research initiatives with broader international objectives, including regional and large-scale comparative studies.

Our professors specialize in a wide range of research methods, from quantitative and qualitative empirical analyses to critical theory and postmodern strategies.

Our research is not exclusively focused on politics in Eastern Europe; we continuously seek to broaden the scope of relevant research topics. As such, we have developed research interests connected to other geographical areas (Southeast Asia, Western Europe, Latin America, etc.), and we are constantly updating our curriculum to include a diverse range of issues in political science, such as gender studies, energy policies, migration, or critical theory.

Members of our department are part of various research institutions and are directly involved in designing research frameworks, collecting and processing data, and even shaping public agendas. We also maintain strong connections with similar departments both in Romania and abroad, and through academic conferences, seminars, and co-authorship, we stay closely linked to the global pulse of Political Science.

A quick look at our team shows the priority we place on advancing research within the department.
